Fireside Follow-up

Fireside Chat with Fred Hutchison

Monday night marked the first Fireside Chat of the spring semester. The students were greeted by Fred Hutchison, founder of Hutchison Law Group. Hutchison works with a variety of companies, from start-ups and university spin-outs to publicly held companies in a wide range of industries, but with particular emphasis on the biotech, pharmaceutical, medical device, healthcare services, software and advanced materials industries.

Hutchison is a fellow ACC alumni attending undergrad at UNC and law school at UVA, where he discovered a passion for law that led to his path in entrepreneurship. He was a founder of the Center for Entrepreneurial Development (CED), and was recognized by the highest North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine for his dedication to his work. As a lawyer he is dedicated to helping entrepreneurs develop their companies through financing and commercialization. He believes that entrepreneurs "see the world differently", and that his discovery of the possibilities within entrepreneurship was like discovering a "secret economy."

He believes that creativity should be taught in schools, where they tend to "teach it out" of us.  Creativity is the key to problem solving and the path to success for entrepreneurs.

We are grateful that Mr. Hutchison spent his time with us Monday evening sharing his story and interest in our ideas. If you are interested in joining the next Fireside Chat keep watching for the announcement on the blog and at www.ncsu.edu.ei website.

A Call for Collaboration (TEDx at NCSU)

It often dawns upon us that no matter how satiated we feel we are with 21st century innovation, that there is always room for more. As the storm of innovation and collaboration approaches our bordering towns, we never feel as though we are caught in the eye of that storm. And unlike others, this is a storm that – most of us – would die to be in.

While Vincent Vangoh sacrificed his ear for a woman in the red light district, most of you would sacrifice yours for an opportunity. And fret no more, for the opportunity has come thanks to Tasso von Windheim and his sister Natalia.

Tasso is planning TEDx at NC State this year. TED events are essentially conferences in which important figures come and give more personalized talks filled with a plethora of advice to students. This year, the event is being planned and will (ideally) be hosted in the new and fancy: James B. Hunt library. Tasso von Windheim and his sister Natalia are looking for speakers, helpers, and pretty much anyone who wants to make this happen. This is your time to listen to the greats of our time right in front of your eyes. The theme for the event is “innovation”, so they will be talking about how they have used innovation to fuel their entrepreneurial hearts towards financial and personal success.  If, through six degrees of separation, you can find a keynote speaker to speak at TEDx then please contact Tasso immediately. This year, Tasso wants Jim Hunt and Jim Goodnight at the event.  With your help, we can make this happen.

Give Tasso a call at [919-272-1785] if you would like to help make this event possible!

Thank you to Ibrahim Zafar for this blog post.

Article of the Week

I am now dedicating Thursdays to bring you all news from the outside world of entrepreneurship  I believe it is important that we pull inspiration from the world around us; it can motivate, inspire or at the least entertain us for a little while.

Here is a link to this weeks article and a picture to give you a little preview: Lessons about Building a Team..

News Update!

Welcome to the first official manic Monday of the semester, I hope it is going well for everyone. This semester I will be starting each week off with news of events, ideas, or updates that are coming soon.

Thursday Night January 17, at 6pm in the Garage on Centennial Campus

---This Thursday, the EI Student Network is hosting a meetup about "Storytelling." Storytelling is the art of boxing up all the awesome stuff you want to communicate, and then giving it to someone in a useful, yawn-free way. Great storytelling is what makes movies awesome, great teachers memorable, and the best businesses successful. On Thursday, Nicholas Sailer and Kevin Miller will be sharing their storytelling experiences, and leading some interactive exercises to help improve our storytelling abilities.

{Here is a video showing what occurs at these exciting meetings}

INTERNSHIP ALERT with Social Sidekick Company Website

---The Social Sidekick team is seeking NC State students for its market research internship in the spring semester. Accepted students will conduct market research by completing customer development with small businesses in Raleigh. Student interns will perform customer development by meeting with business owners to hear their opinions on social media.

Spring Semester

Students, welcome back and happy 2013 to you all! It is time to start a new semester full of change and transition to new opportunities. I hope you all will be committed to staying involved with entrepreneurship and this blog. I strategically updated the blog over break with a few helpful "info graphics", addressing a few key ideas and facts about major topics that can be useful for those entrepreneurial thinkers. Hopefully, you all found those graphics interesting; but now it is time to get back to serious blogging about ideas, people, and events!

1. Remember to attend the Student Network meetings this semester at the Garage on Centennial Campus. The first one is next Thursday (1/17) at 6 pm!  These meetings are a great way to network with various people, and to attend interesting workshops as well as presentations from influential and successful entrepreneurs. The are old postings in the blog that speak about the meetings if you wish to get a better idea of what they have to offer!

2. Our surrounding community in the Triangle is also blossoming with opportunity this spring!

Attention all NC State students interested and curious about entrepreneurship!

We are pleased to announce that the Triangle Startup Factory and NC State University will host the inaugural "Triangle.edu" event at the Convocation Center at NC State's College of Textiles on Centennial Campus on January 16th from 6pm to 8pm.  This event is the first in a semi-annual series intended to ensure that Triangle university students interested in tech start-ups and entrepreneurship are aware of the opportunities presented by the existing tech ecosystem.  The event will feature speakers from the Triangle entrepreneurial community in disciplines such as executive management, technical development, marketing and sales.  Refreshments and appetizers will be served.

Students from all universities are invited to attend. Buses will be transporting Duke University and UNC students, as well.

Attendance is free, but please register: http://triangleedu.eventbrite.com/#
